Karl Vonder Schmalz, a remarkable individual, was born on August 13, 1939, and embarked on his final journey on July 23, 2023.  His unwavering spirit and incredible achievements have left an indelible mark on the world.

Karl was born to Henry Vonder Schmalz and Elizabeth McKenna, and it was apparent from an early age that he possessed a profound thirst for knowledge and an insatiable curiosity.  He attended Central High School in Philadelphia, where he excelled academically and graduated with honors in 1957.  Continuing his educational pursuit and after being recruited by several Ivy League and other elite colleges, Karl first enrolled in Yale University followed by the University of Pennsylvania, both on a full athletic scholarship. Karl graduated at the top of his class with a Chemical Engineering degree that would lay the foundation for his future accomplishments.

Karls's professional journey was illustrious and diverse.  Out of college he took his first job with Rohm and Haas as an engineer.  A few years later took a position with Betz Laboratories and rose in the ranks to one of the top executives in that young company.  During his years at Betz Karl started Betz Laboratory's European division and had the opportunity to move his family to England while he focused on expanding his career.  Karl was so very proud of the year he spent in England with his family where they traveled through Europe and the Bristish Isles.  His dedication and drive to excel in his career lead him to eventually purchase Scholler, Inc., where he spent over 30 years building a successful family business with his two sons.  This was a testament to his unwavering entrepreneurial acumen and spirit.

Throughout his life, Karl found immense joy and fulfillment in the warm embrace of love and family.  He married his beloved Elaine Brennan in the year 1962 and together they forged a bond that lasted a lifetime and beyond.  Elaine was truly the center of his universe.  They were blessed with three children: Karl, who is married to Tina Raymond; Kurt, who is married to Emily Martinez; and Karen, who is married to Scott Philips.  This growing family brought immeasurable happiness to Karl's heart, and he prided himself on being a loving and devoted father.

Karl's legacy extends beyond his immediate family, as he was also a beloved grandfather to ten grandchildren, Amanda, Chase, Jordyn, Max, Emma, Devon, Kurt Jr., Brynne, Payton and Tess.  His love, guidance, and wisdom resonated with these young souls, shaping their lives in countless ways.

Anyone that truly knew Karl understood his passion for the game of Golf.   He first took up the sport in his late 30s and never looked back.  After joining Huntingdon Valley Country Club, Karl went on to become a formidable player, a devoted and proud club board member and a lifelong promoter of the game.

Karl Vonder Schmalz was a true embodiment of perseverance, dedication and integrity.  His contribution to society and his impact on those who knew him cannot be measured.  Although he has departed this world due to natural causes, he will forever live on in the hearts and memories of all who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.  He was a truly humble man.

A celebration of life will be held with immediate family.
