With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Charles “Charlie” Nicol on February 13, 2025, just shy of his 93rd birthday. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a fantastic grandfather, a doting great-grandfather, and a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend. Affectionately known as “PopPop” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Charlie’s kindness, humor, and love touched all who knew him.
Born on February 27, 1932, in Matawan, New Jersey, Charlie grew up in a lively neighborhood, attending St. Joseph’s School. He often shared fond memories of his childhood adventures, school days, and the fun antics he and his friends got into. At a young age, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country with pride and later entertaining his family with stories of his experiences.
On September 11, 1954, Charlie married the love of his life, Florence “Flossy” Stanley, at St. James Church in Red Bank, New Jersey. From that day forward, his world revolved around Flossy. Together, they built a warm and loving home in the quiet country town of Lincroft, where they raised four children. Their strong and devoted relationship provided security, stability, and a lasting foundation for generations to come.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Charlie pursued a career filled with meaningful and unique experiences. He worked at Bendix and Nestlé before spending more than 20 years as a Grounds Supervisor for the U.S. Army at the Bayonne Base. Even after retiring, he remained active, always finding enjoyable jobs to keep himself busy.
Charlie had a deep love for the outdoors. He was an avid gardener, taking great pride in growing beautiful flowers for Flossy. He also loved fishing, crabbing, golfing, and especially spending time at the racetrack.
His children fondly remember summers spent at the pool, beach, and family trips to the Poconos, while his grandchildren will forever treasure the holidays and vacations they shared together. To his great-grandchildren, he was the funniest person around.
What people will remember most about Charlie is his ever-present smile. Even in his final days, he remained sharp, quick-witted, and well-informed. If you ever needed the latest sports update—especially about golf—Charlie was the one to ask.
Charlie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence “Flossy” Nicol (Stanley), and his parents, Mary (Trahim) and Louis Nicol. He is survived by his children: Florence “Nicol” and Norman Sommer, Jeanne and Frederick Fable, Charles Nicol, and Thomas Nicol. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Christopher Fable and James Casa, Crystal Warhurst, Amber and Marc Wolfson, Erika and Eric Fonseca, Charles and Alicia Nicol, David and Jaclyn Sommer, Ryan Nicol, Nicolette and Ryan Casey, Daniel Sommer, Deirdre Nicol, and Jessica Sommer, as well as his seven great-grandchildren: Daunte, Riley, Colin, Hunter, Vincent, Aden, and Maya. His family will forever cherish his memory.
Charlie spent his final days surrounded by the love of his family, passing peacefully while holding the hands of his two daughters.
A funeral Mass will be held in his honor on Thursday, May 1st, at 10 AM at St. James Church, Red Bank, NJ.
His funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, at 11 AM in the Chapel at Holmdel Cemetery.
